The Carroll County Department of Social Services, a division of the Virginia Department of Social Services, is a locally administered agency. Services provide the citizens of Carroll County, Virginia, with a variety of benefits and services. You may qualify for the following benefit programs:

Auxiliary Grants - For Aged and Disabled. Used for payments to Homes for Aged, etc.

Energy Assistance - Assists with heating costs for elderly, disabled, needy families and individuals. Includes emergency assistance (repairs, fuel, etc.)

General Relief - Payments for individuals eligible for SSI and one-time emergency assistance for individuals and families in crisis.

Medicaid - Eligibility determination for medical assistance under federal program.

State and Local Hospitalization - Inpatient hospital, emergency room, and outpatient care.

Temporary Assistance to Needy Families - Transitional cash payments for families with children (e.g. unemployed single mother, disabled individual, etc.). Training, employment and self-sufficiency are the objectives of TANF Program.

Electronic Benefit Transfer - (Food stamp program) Provides eligible recipients with a debit styled card to purchase nutritional items for consumption. To visit the State Department of Social Services EBT program Click Here.


Additionally, the Department of Social Services offers a wide array of services, such as:

Assistance with Adoption Services-
Counseling, placement, and referral services for persons wishing to place or receive a child for adoption.

Adult Protective Services-
Investigation of abuse complaints and services for adults (18 and over) who are at-risk.

Adult Services-
Provision of companion, homemaker, or chore services to elderly in need of in-home services.

Child Day Care Services-
Day care payments provided, so parent(s) can work or train for employment

Child Protective Services-
Investigation of abuse complaints and provision of services for children who are at-risk.

Crisis Intervention-
24-Hour, 7 days-a-week, on-call services.

Domestic Violence-
Counseling and referral services for domestic violence situations.

Employment Services-
Education, job skills training, and employment referral.

Foster Care-
Temporary care is arranged for children who cannot be in their own homes, due to abuse, neglect, etc.

Rental Assistance Program-
Section 8 and other rental assistance programs are intended to provide low- and moderate-income families and individuals with decent, safe, sanitary housing at monthly rents they can afford. Intake and Support Services-
Initial assessments and services for family preservation and child welfare. Includes home studies, mediation, counseling, and other outreach services

The Carroll County Department of Social Services strives to prevent abuse and neglect of the citizens of Carroll County. Should you suspect abuse or neglect you may report such by calling our office. After hours emergency calls may be placed by calling the Carroll County Sheriffs Office at 911, or 276-728-4146, and ask that an on call child/adult protective services worker contact you.

What is Comprehensive Services Act?
It is a Virginia law designed to help troubled youths and their families.

How are services developed?
The Carroll County Community Policy & Management Team along with the Family Assessment Planning Team, has a partnership with State, Local, and Private agencies, parents and service providers. The goal is to incorporate positive services, work together to plan, and provide services, that encourage future social growth for families and its members. In each community, local teams decide how to accomplish this.
